LONDRES (AFP) Quelque 60 militants pacifistes, dont des Belges, décidés à servir de "boucliers humains" en cas d'attaque militaire contre l'Irak ont quitté Londres pour Bagdad samedi à bord d'un convoi de "double-deckers", les autobus londoniens à étage. Ils doivent parcourir quelque 4.800 kilomètres avant de rallier la capitale irakienne, le 8 février, selon l'organisation HumanShield, qui a monté l'opération en moins d'un mois. Les volontaires comptent rester en Irak si une opération armée est lancée contre ce pays, pour "faire pression" sur les Etats-Unis et la Grande-Bretagne, qui se trouveraient contraints de bombarder leurs propres citoyens. Un tiers des volontaires partis samedi sont britanniques, selon Stefan Simanowitz, l'un des organisateurs. D'autres viennent d'Australie, de Nouvelle-Zélande, des Etats-Unis, d'Espagne, de Belgique ou encore du Brésil

Mme Russel a dit qu'elle se rendra en Irak dès que son visa sera en règle. Elle a dit que ses enfants désapprobaient son départ, mais qu'ils l'ont accepté avec réticence."Bien sûr, ils ne veulent pas que je parte. Qui le voudrait ?" dit-elle."C'est un très très grand risque, mais ils respectent que je ne puisse pas vivre comme australienne et accepter cela - c'est si mal."

Le bouclier humain a été organisé par une organisation contre la guerre "Devenez le changement" (Become de Change). Le site web de l'organisation revendique "le bouclier est nécessaire pour ralentir notre marche frénétique vers la violence, et motiver des solutions alternatives pour résoudre les problèmes qui nous désolent tous. "Arrêter la guerre de par notre présence en Irak est plus qu'à 100% assuré", dit-il pour ceux qui craignent pour les vies de leurs proches, dans l'armée ou de réserve, le meilleur moyen de leur éviter de de mourir au combat ou d'être éjecté du ciel(?) est d'aller en irak eux-mêmes joindre le bouclier. "Quel soldat pet déverser des bombes sur un pays où peut se trouver sa mère ou sa femme ?"

Un pensionné de Bradford dit qu'il est disposé à mourir pour aider à éviter les attaques militaires contre l'Irak. Karl Dallas est parti en Irak pour s’offrir comme bouclier humain dans l'espoir d'empêcher la guerre dans le pays.

Ce musicien et écrivain de 72 ans, habitant Bradford, voyage avec un groupe de militants de la paix, et rejoindra l’Irak le 15 février 2003 "pour soutenir l'humanité."

M. Dallas dit que son voyage au Moyen-Orient n'est pas anti-patriotique, mais croit que la présence des militants occidentaux de la paix posera un dilemme moral au gouvernement.

Il a dit au nouveau programme d’infos « Look North » de la BBC : "je pense qu'il est exact que Tony Blair devrait avoir un dilemme moral. Tony Blair est juste ignorant de ce que pense l'opinion publique ; ainsi qui est anti-patriote ? Je pense que c’est lui."

M. Dallas ne croit pas que les groupes seront employés comme des pions politiques par Saddam Hussein. « Nous serons sur les rues, nous serons avec le peuple » a-t-il précisé. "Je suis allé à Bagdad, j'ai fraternisé avec des chrétiens là-bas."

M. Dallas ajoute qu'il est disposé à mourir en cas d’hostilités : "Je sais que c’est un risque, je suis un vieil homme, j'ai eu une bonne vie et je ne veux pas qu'elle soit gaspillée."

WASHINGTON (CNN) : 24 heures après le départ de Londres pour Bagdad des pacifistes à bord de bus à impériale et d'un taxi londonien dans l'espoir d'empêcher les bombardements des Américains et de leurs alliés, l'administration Bush critique leurs efforts. Un reportage de Marga Ortigas de la CNN sur les pacifistes qui prévoient de se rendre en Irak en bus pour constituer des boucliers humains afin d'éviter la guerre.

"Nous ne pouvons pas conseiller que des gens se laissent utiliser par un tyran et un dictateur, connu pour avoir fait des choses horribles à son propre peuple et à ses voisins, déclarait Andrew Card, chef d'état-major de la Maison Blanche, au Fox News Sunday. Ce n'est pas le moment que des gens se désignent comme boucliers humains".

Samedi, les participants déclaraient qu'ils espéraient que leur présence empêcherait les programmeurs de guerre de mener à terme leurs menaces d'attaquer l'Irak, accusé d'avoir amassé des armes de destruction massive, en violation des résolutions de l'ONU. L'éventualité de corps occidentaux blancs volant en éclats en même temps que les Irakiens devrait les faire réfléchir encore à cette guerre impérialiste du pétrole, affirmait samedi l'organisateur Ken O'Keefe, un ancien marine américain de la guerre du Golfe de 1991.Le groupe de 60 volontaires comprend des Britanniques, des Américains, des Espagnols, des Brésiliens, des Australiens et des Israéliens, âgés de 20 à 60 ans.

Selon la volontaire Sue Darling, les pacifistes prévoient de rouler nuit et jour à travers l'Europe puis la Turquie, pour arriver à la frontière irakienne le 4 ou 5 février où les autorités leur donneront des visas d'entrée.Un des participants a déclaré à la CNN que l'expédition doit être rejointe le 15 février par un autre convoi de peut-être plusieurs centaines de volontaires.

"Notre intention est de rendre politiquement impossible à George Bush et Tony Blair de mener cette guerre, dit John Letts, propriétaire de deux des bus et également conducteur. Letts, père de quatre enfants, raconte que la coalition pacifiste est venue lui demander conseil pour le trajet jusqu'à Bagdad et qu'il a alors proposé son aide et ses bus pour la cause.

Les bus à impériale ont été modifiés pour recevoir des lits de camps pour le voyage qui doit durer deux semaines. Les bus de Letts sont rouges mais le troisième bus et le taxi ont été peints en blanc. Un drapeau blanc, pour symboliser la paix, a été placé sur le toit du taxi.

Dans une interview en direct en décembre, O'Keefe a déclaré : "Nous courrons le risque d'être mutilés ou tués mais c'est simplement le même risque que celui que les Irakiens innocents auront à affronter eux-mêmes. Je préférerais mourir pour la paix et la justice que 'prospérer' en me faisant complice de la guerre et de meurtres massifs". O'Keefe a renoncé à sa nationalité américaine en 1999. Quant à Sue Darling, 60 ans, elle ajoute qu'elle est une ancienne diplomate britannique auprès des Nations-Unies.

LONDON, Jan 8 - To the delight of Baghdad, anti-war activists round the world are staging their own mobilisation to Iraq to act as "human shields" if the bombs start falling and in solidarity with the Iraqi people.

As the United States and Britain build up their military presence in the Gulf, the volunteers from Western and Muslim groups are also planning to converge on Iraq for what they view as an 11th hour peace mission.

Shrugging off criticism they are handing a propaganda gift to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, the groups involved insist they can recruit hundreds or even thousands of volunteers.

"I am calling for a mass migration to Iraq. We can stop this mad war," said Ken Nichols, a Dutch-based former U.S. marine who was in the 1991 Gulf War and is now behind one of the highest-profile human shield convoys.

His "We the People" group is seeking volunteers to join a convoy leaving London this month. They plan to travel through European and Middle Eastern capitals to arrive in Iraq in early February where they intend to fan out to key installations.

"If war starts, I will be in the most vulnerable areas. I want to be out where the bombs drop," Nichols added, saying hundreds would be on his convoy. "If there is a risk of large Western casualties, that is quite a political liability."

Another big rallying point is in Iraq's neighbour Jordan.

There, a campaign led by justifyist, Islamist parties and civic bodies is seeking 100,000 human shield volunteers.

Organisers, the National Mobilisation Committee for the Defence of Iraq, would not give current figures but said many were responding and that the first convoy would leave in a week.

"The war against Iraq is a war against the whole Arab nation," committee head Hakm al-Fayez told Reuters.

The new human shield plans have inevitably revived memories of the Gulf War when Saddam forcibly held thousands of Western hostages after his invasion of Kuwait. Many were put near sensitive sites in a futile bid to dissuade attacks.

Iraq also used Iraqis -- alongside some foreign volunteers -- as human shields in 1998 against U.S.-British bombing.

IRAQI DELIGHT

Not surprisingly, Baghdad has welcomed the latest offers.

"This is a practical Arab and international reaction to the hostile build-up of troops in the Gulf and neighbouring countries," said one senior Iraqi official, Saad Qasim Hammoud.

To avoid being seen as pawns of Saddam, some among the many groups and charities organising trips to Iraq are shunning the tag "human shield" and are as critical of his government as they are of U.S. and British war plans.

These groups prefer to couch their aims in terms of educating the West and showing solidarity with ordinary Iraqis.

"We do not support any government," said Kathy Kelly, of the U.S.-based Voices in the Wilderness (VIW) group which has long opposed sanctions on Baghdad and is now organising an "Iraq Peace Team" to travel there.

"We want to be alongside people at a difficult and stressful time. We hope there will not be a war. If there is, we will be there," added Kelly, who was part of a 72-member peace camp inside Iraq near the border with Saudi Arabia in 1991.

One poignant stance has been taken by a group of American relatives of September 11 victims — "Families for Peaceful Tomorrows" — who justify for Iraq days ago on a week-long visit.

"My hope is that all people will come to realise that loss of more human life will not solve the problems of the world," said Kathleen Tinley, who lost her uncle Michael when two hijacked planes crashed into New York's World Trade Centre.

Many of the activists said they were well aware of Saddam's alleged crimes — both in terms of repression of Iraqis and the weapons capacity that is the West's main bone of contention — but they could not be quiet on the suffering of ordinary Iraqis.

"If people had actually read the U.N. reports or been to the country, like I have, and seen babies dying of diarrhoea, they would realize what the West has been doing with its sanctions and what this is all about," said British student Matthew Barr, who is leaving for Iraq with a VIW group.

Ken eut l'idée d'une migration massive vers l'Irak qui se tiendrait debout face à l'agression des États-Unis et du Royaume-Uni. Le mouvement mondial qui s'est amplifié autour de l'action de bouclier humain, visant à protéger le peuple d'Irak, ne s'arrêtera pas en raison de la perte d'un individu. En seulement quelques semaines, cette action de bouclier humain a suscité un grand intérêt à travers le monde. Nous avons établi des liens entre volontaires en France, en Italie, en Espagne, en Turquie, en Nouvelle-Zélande, en Autriche, au Canada, aux États-Unis, au Mexique, en Belgique, en Allemagne, dans le Balkans et ailleurs. Toutes ces personnes partagent un idée commune. Les volontaires de cette action croient que la situation de la population civile irakiennne est tellement injuste qu'ils ont sacrifié la sécurité de leurs foyers et de leurs familles, beaucoup ont quitté leur travail, pour affronter la possibilité de ne pas revenir. Cela ne nous ralentit pas - car rien n'a changé pour le peuple que nous essayons de soutenir.

L'action est un acte de foi envers une cause bien plus grande. Nous ne sommes pas une organisation bien établie. Nous sommes un groupe d'individus essayant de faciliter l'action, par des qui ont le sentiment qu'ils doivent se dresser et dire "nous ne rentrerons pas chez nous pour soutenir une guerre qui verra la mort massive de citoyens innocents, le délitement d'un pays déjà ecrasé et tentant toujours désespérément de subvenir à des besoins aussi essentiels que de l'eau potable".

L'inaction du monde est la cause de cette situation, et c'est l'action du monde qui doit y remédier. Il s'agit des droits de l'homme les plus élémentaires. Faites le savoir à tous les leaders politiques, vos voisins, vos amis et votre famille. Nous sommes en route vers l'Irak ! Nous pouvons empêcher cette guerre !

Istanbul, Turquie — La police des frontières a refusé, vendredi, l'entrée en Turquie d'un ancien Marine américain à la tête d'un groupe anti-guerre de "boucliers humains" se dirigeant vers l'Irak pour prévenir une éventuelle attaque menée par les États-Unis, a dit un responsable.

Ken O'Keefe, le fondateur du groupe de protestation "Mission de boucliers humains" qui avait rejoint la Turquie par avion depuis l'Italie, n'a pas été autorisé à entrer dans le pays lorsqu'il a présenté son passeport émis par la "World Service Authority" (autorité de service mondiale).

Un porte-parole de l'aéroport d'Istamboul a dit que la Turquie ne reconnait pas ce passeport. Le porte-parole a dit que O'Keefe a protesté, criant qu'il avait voyagé à travers le monde avec ce passeport et qu'il était "citoyen du monde".

Cinq autres activistes accompagnant O'Keefe ont été autorisés à entrer dans le pays, tandis que O'Keefe est retourné en Italie par avion.

Diplomacy is failing. The United Nations is teetering between impotent protest and surly compliance. Europe is split painfully down the middle, an unsought bonus for America's hawks. Nothing now stands in the way of the Anglo-Saxon war machine but a few dozen miles of desert, a few dying spasms of jaw-jaw and a former US Marine called Ken O'Keefe with blazing eyes, hacked hair and a row of "cut here" crosses tattooed round his neck.

Yesterday he was deported from Turkey back to Italy, leaving 43 of his party and two buses behind. He had tried to enter with a passport Istanbul does not recognise, from the World Service Authority, a US-based group that issues them based on an article of the UN Universal Declaration of human rights that guarantees the right to travel freely.

In Rome he had said: "Turkey's on fire. They're very excited about this action." The Turkish government is still undecided on how far to support the war, and O'Keefe felt the human shields had a role to play there in swinging the argument.

Ken Nichols O'Keefe, his mum, Pat, their friends Katerina, from Norway, Bentley (New Zealand), Gordon (Australia) and a few dozen other peaceniks who conceived the ambition to be voluntary human shields in Iraq are now all, barring divine intervention, that stand between the world and a new war.

With hope like this (you might be forgiven for thinking) who needs despair? O'Keefe and his group justify London bound for Baghdad in three London double-decker buses on 25 January. This week one of the buses packed up in Rome. "Water got into the oil," says Gary, the driver from Feltham, London, who has promised his family he will not cross the Iraqi border. "The head gasket's about had it."

You could almost hear the scoffers' guffaws: how typical, how pathetically hopeless. But in part because of the character of O'Keefe, the person who has inspired and leads the campaign, scoffing does not come so easy when you meet the new Merry Pranksters face to face.

This serious young man with the silly tattoos is a throwback to the civil rights activists who rode the peace buses and trains that travelled the Deep South four decades ago, fighting the good, non-violent fight against racial segregation.

The human shields may vanish rapidly into the blizzard of war news in the coming weeks, never to be heard from again. But O'Keefe, who knows what war is, is clear on where he stands in relation to the great non-violent struggles. His website (www.uksociety.org) is adorned with photos of his heroes, Gandhi, Einstein, Martin Luther King, the Dalai Lama, Noam Chomsky. Gandhi taught that when a cause is just, even overwhelming superiority of arms can be neutralised by the skilful application of non-violent resistance. "Use truth as your anvil," O'Keefe quotes Gandhi. "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." O'Keefe is treading as firmly as he can in Gandhi's footsteps.

"I've been calling for a mass migration to Iraq," he had told me, while becalmed between gaskets in Rome. "Hundreds of people are supporting us, thousands of e-mails are coming in. The buses are just the beginning. We're also co-ordinating the charter of planes to Istanbul and Amman. We want to see a mass migration to Iraq, making it impossible for the UK and the US to start the war. People are beginning to grasp that they have the ability to dictate to governments. We have the power: it's just a matter of figuring out how to use it. I believe that if you get enough white people down there, we'll stop the war. We in the West don't put the same value on white as on non-white lives. That's a shame, but we can use that to prevent further deaths."

The Turkish government is still undecided on how far to support the war, and O'Keefe feels the human shields have a role to play in swinging the argument, though his prompt deportation has thrown his plans further into disarray.

From Istanbul – and the timetable, like the route, is constantly in flux, impossible to pin down – the rest of the party will drive in the two sound buses, accompanied by a local lorry with the bags, south into Syria, hoping O'Keefe can rejoin them, then possibly to Amman in Jordan, and a swing sharply east to head across the desert into Iraq. In Baghdad they will present themselves to Saddam Hussein. O'Keefe has already written to him, but intends to avoid being filmed shaking his hand. He has had no answer to his letter.

But already the human tide is flowing the other way: yesterday expatriates working in Iraq and neighbouring countries were reported to be trickling away. That trickle will be a torrent when diplomatic advisories become orders.

Soon O'Keefe and his company will be, with journalists and the odd spook, the only white non-combatants moving in the opposite direction. "It's potentially dangerous, though not necessarily dangerous," O'Keefe said. "It's a war zone. I fought in the first Gulf War in Kuwait, and I'm comfortable with my mortality."

And many in his group, he insists, are equally philosophical. "Of course, some are naïve, I wouldn't deny that. But many understand what they're getting into it and accept it. There's a couple from Norway, they're only 18 but they have a deep understanding of what's involved."

Forget the cut-here tattoos, the tear-drop tattoo under his justify eye, balanced by a small fist by the right; Ken O'Keefe carries to Baghdad the hopes, and the fears, of many millions of ordinary people in Europe and beyond for whom the looming war is an unjustified obscenity, a nightmare lurch into a terrifying violence. "I'm actually a patriot," he said. "But it's an insult to our intelligence to think the US cares anything about the people of Iraq. The US is out of control, and if you give them all the power, either you're a fool or you're in cahoots with them."
